From the Oil Cabinet: Peppermint for Cooling, Clarity & Comfort
Hello Amazing Horse & Pet Family,
Welcome back to From the Oil Cabinet—a recurring series where I share the essential oils I use most and safe, practical ways they can support the well-being of our animals.
If you missed our last feature on how Petitgrain can help calm stressed or anxious traveling animals, you can catch up here. This month, we are shifting gears from deep calming to a crisp boost of physical and mental energy with one of my all-time favorites: Peppermint (Mentha piperita).
Peppermint is refreshing, versatile, and honestly? It’s just as much a staple in my car as it is at the stables. Because tired humans need a little pick-me-up too, and peppermint delivers every single time.
What is Peppermint Essential Oil?
Peppermint is steam-distilled from the leaves of the Mentha piperita plant. Did you know that peppermint isn't actually found growing wild in nature? It is a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint! That unique combination is exactly what gives it that distinctive bold, cooling kick that sets it apart from other mint varieties.
The aroma is bright, crisp, and instantly cooling—like a burst of icy freshness the moment you open the bottle. I like to call it my "peppermint pick-me-up" because one good whiff snaps me right out of a foggy morning, and my horses seem to feel the same way! If you are used to softer, floral oils like lavender, peppermint offers a refreshing contrast—a little bolder, a little more invigorating, and perfect for animals who prefer something clean and crisp.

The Benefits of Peppermint for Horses
Whether you are looking to soothe tired muscles after a long ride, support clearer breathing, or keep pesky flies at bay, peppermint is your go-to. It’s a natural energizer for both you and your horse—perfect for groggy mornings and those long, draining trailering days.

This is where peppermint really shines for me. I recently visited the Santana Horse Rescue and brought along a bottle to let the horses smell it. One of the volunteers was fascinated, so I handed her the bottle and suggested she take it to the back of the field to show it to Liam, a horse who tended to stay to himself.
Liam followed her from the back of the field all the way to the front gate! She then let him take a good whiff, and he immediately started sniffing the oil and doing the Flehmen response (that adorable lip-curling thing horses do!). It was one of those beautiful moments that reminded me why I love sharing oils with horses—they tell you exactly when they like something.

Natural Support for Travel and Recovery
The cooling sensation of peppermint helps horses unwind, and the licking and chewing that usually follows a session is their way of saying, "Yes, more of that, please." It is also a game-changer for travel. A single drop on a cloth tied near the trailer vent keeps the air fresh and helps nervous travelers stay more alert and comfortable on the road. Bonus? It naturally deters flies along the way!
How to Safely Introduce Peppermint to Your Horse
When introducing peppermint to your animals, always start with inhalation.
Let Them Choose: Let your horse sniff the bottle—cap on or off—and watch their reaction. If they lean in or show curiosity, that’s your green light. If they turn away, respect that choice and try again another day.
Dilute for Topical Application: For topical use, always dilute first. A safe starting ratio is a 1% to 3% dilution, depending on your horse and the situation. This works out to roughly 3 to 9 drops per 1 oz of carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil). When trying peppermint for the first time, always start on the lower end and work your way up.
Where to Apply: Gently apply to the chest, legs, or poll.
⚠️ Safety Note: Always avoid sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, and nose.
You can also diffuse peppermint in the barn to freshen the air and discourage flies. Just remember to keep your diffuser up high and secure where curious noses can’t reach it.
DIY Recipe: Post-Ride Cooling Spray
If you are looking for a simple way to work peppermint into your routine, give this quick recipe a try:
10 drops Peppermint essential oil
5 drops Lavender essential oil
4 oz Water
1 tsp Fractionated coconut oil (helps the oils blend)
Directions: Combine everything in a spray bottle and shake well before each use. Mist onto your horse's legs or chest after a hard ride—avoiding the eyes entirely. It’s a fast, fuss-free way to help them cool down, relax, and smell absolutely wonderful.
Let's Connect!
As with all essential oils, every animal is an individual. What one horse loves, another might want nothing to do with, so pay close attention to their reactions and let them guide you.
