Hello, I’m Shelayne Fico, a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist and Level II Animal Aromatherapy Specialist with a special focus on horses.
Through Shelayne Fico EquiBalance, I offer personalized equine aromatherapy consultations, Horse Harmony Touch™ sessions, educational programs, clinics, and demonstrations. Aromatherapy is the foundation of my work, and sessions often include red light therapy and acupressure based on the individual horse and the purpose of the session.
My goal is to help horse owners explore safe, practical ways aromatherapy may support relaxation, comfort, emotional balance, and overall well-being.
A Horse-Centered Approach
I believe horses should have a voice in the process.
Using aromatic self-selection, I introduce essential oils slowly and give each horse time to explore the aroma and respond in their own way. I carefully observe body language, breathing, facial expressions, movement, and other subtle changes.
Some horses show a clear interest in an aroma, while others remain neutral or choose to move away. Each response is valuable and respected.
No two horses are exactly alike. Every session is shaped around the individual horse, the owner’s goals, and responsible essential oil use.
Training and Experience
I completed my clinical aromatherapy education through Aromahead Institute and received specialized animal aromatherapy training through Janet Roark, DVM, an integrative veterinarian.
I am also Fear Free Certified, which reinforces my commitment to respecting each animal’s comfort, choices, and boundaries while helping to reduce unnecessary fear and stress.
I bring more than a decade of professional animal care experience through All Things Pets, along with many years of hands-on experience caring for horses and companion animals.
While living in India for a significant part of my life, I was introduced to Ayurveda, homeopathy, essential oils, and other traditional wellness practices. That experience deepened my appreciation for natural, whole-animal approaches to wellness and continues to influence my work today.
I am also the author of Beyond the Barn: Essential Oil Fundamentals for Horse Owners, an educational resource for horse owners who want to explore the safe and responsible use of essential oils with their animals.
Watch How I Let the Horse Lead
In this short video, I introduce essential oils to Tux and explain some of the signs I watch for when a horse shows interest, remains neutral, or chooses to move away.
At the heart of my work is a simple belief: horses deserve to be heard, respected, and included in their care.
Aromatherapy and other complementary wellness services are intended to work alongside appropriate veterinary care, not replace it.
